BitLearn: Gross National Happiness
The common measure of a country’s growth and position in the community of nations is GDP or Gross Domestic Product. Many scholars and countries alike have come to realize that GDP is not an adequate measure and there are other ways of looking at the worth of a nation in comparison to other nations. Scholars are starting to develop different concepts that measure a society’s overall well-being, health or happiness. One measure that has been analyzed is the measure of Gross National Happiness or GNH.
The tiny buddhist kingdom of Buthan developed the GNH measure in 2005 and ran with it. Keys areas of the Bhutanese GNH measures include psychological well-being, health, time use, education, culture, good governance, ecology, community vitality and living standards. The GNH studies in Bhutan steer clear of economic measures and rather focus on cultural, social, psychological and educational issues.
